November is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month
To help
raise awareness for prostate cancer, many men across the world chose
to participate in what has been coined "No Shave
November". To show their support, they begin the month
with a freshly shaven face and refrain from shaving for all 30 days
of November. Their obvious lack of "grooming" helps their
cause by creating an "in-your-face" reminder of this
prevalent disease.
STHL Staffer
Paul Almy, Deputy Director of Technology and Operations is showing
his support by participating in "No Shave November".
He's made it into Week 3 and is doing well so far!
Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer among men, but is one
that can most often be successfully treated. The numbers speak for
themselves - there are more than 2 million men in the US who have
survived prostate cancer. With a disease this prevalent, it is
important that men learn as much as they can to help reduce their
risk and choose the best options for testing and treatment.
The
American Cancer Society is dedicated to research to help save lives
from all types of cancer, with prostate cancer included.

STHL Web Portal Training Continues for ER Scribes
On
November 12, 2012, STHL Project Coordinator Staci Molyneaux trained
the newest group of scribes from Wilson Memorial Hospital in Southern
Tier HealthLink (STHL) Web Portal access. The ER scribes work
side-by-side with the ER physicians who also have web portal
access. Scribes and providers access medications, allergies,
lab results, transcribed reports, and radiology images through the
STHL Community PACS Viewer.
The ER scribes were previously assisting only the ER
physicians at Wilson Memorial Hospital. However, with the
addition of the newly trained ER scribes, Binghamton General ER
physicians will also be able to reap the benefits of their
assistance.
Dr. Dina Farrell and ER scribe Cindy Pulling were
responsible for organizing the STHL Web Portal training.
"STHL
is very useful to us because many of our patients receive healthcare
at various places throughout the Southern Tier. Now, when a
patient tells me they've had a study done at another site or
institution, we can just access the STHL HIE and view it! It
saves time since we don't have to wait for paperwork to be faxed, and
also saves money because we don't have to repeat a study that was
already performed on the patient." Dr. Farrell, UHS ER.

Hurricane Sandy Strikes - Were you Prepared?
Hurricane Sandy struck with force on Monday, October
29th, 2012. Thankfully our region was spared the worst of the
storm. Southern Tier HealthLink (STHL) was prepared for
the worst but hoped for the best on that day.
STHL worked with the Greater Binghamton Health Center as they set up an Evacuation Center in the gymnasium
of their facility, and was prepared to assist doctors and
hospital staff members, if need be, by providing necessary health
information from the STHL Health Information Exchange (HIE) for
residents who may have been displaced due to flooding or long-term
electrical outages. In an emergency or disaster situation, STHL is
prepared to 'go where they are needed' providing the community with
critical health information on demand.
