Southern Tier HealthLink Connects with Medicaid
9/12/2011

Southern Tier HealthLink (STHL) has completed the first project in its plan to connect the STHL Health Information Exchange (HIE) with New York State (NYS) Medicaid through the State Health Information Network of New York (SHIN-NY).

STHL completed the Medicaid Medication Management use case as a part of its Healthcare Efficiency & Affordability Law grant (HEAL5).  STHL has demonstrated the ability to connect to the NYS Medicaid network and access medication records that will benefit both regional healthcare providers and consumers.  As soon as NYS Medicaid authorizes HIEs to receive this data, this functionality can be made available to providers who access the STHL HIE either through the STHL Web Portal or through a connected Electronic Healthcare Record (EHR).

With this success, STHL has begun the process of exchanging records with the State, which will ultimately result in the ability of NYS medical providers to examine healthcare records statewide, no matter where a New Yorker is treated.  Patients will ultimately benefit by having their medication history and other records accessible to existing and new providers at both their home and remote locations.

The Medicaid Medication Management project is very significant to Southern Tier HealthLink because it demonstrates our capability and strong desire to connect to the NYS healthcare system, commented Christina Galanis, STHL Executive Director.  We are excited to take another important step in Connecting the Dots for Southern Tier healthcare providers and consumers statewide.

Southern Tier HealthLink (sthlny.com) was established with leadership and support from UHS, Lourdes Hospital and other stakeholders in 2005.  STHL is a non-profit organization designed as a partnership which brings together healthcare providers and consumers in Central New York to connect the dots with technology that will improve health care quality, access, and safety while reducing costs.  STHL now offers a Patient Portal, allowing healthcare consumers to access, manage, and monitor their health information through the internet.  For more information contact Christina Galanis at or .
